STELLARTON – George Edwin (Bessie) MacLean, 88, of Abercrombie, formerly of MacLellan’s Brook Road but forever a Stellarton boy, succumbed to a lengthy illness, surrounded by his wife and family, on Sunday, May 7, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in 1929, Edwin was one of 13 children of the late David A. and Lillian (Osborne) McLean, Acadia Avenue, Stellarton.
He was a coal miner in his early years at both the Albion and MacGregor mines. When they closed, he became employed with the Town of Stellarton for the next 34 years, retiring in 1994. He loved his baseball and in younger years, played for the Stellarton Albions and umpired as well. He was an avid Yankee’s fan and a committed gardener of both flowers and vegetables when age and health permitted and enjoyed sharing his harvest with others. He loved animals and animals seemed to be drawn to him as well.
Edwin is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Kathleen (Swain) MacLean, and devoted children, Doug (Bertha) MacLellan’s Brook; Sharon (at home); William (Marina) Stellarton and Diane Margeson (Bruce) Abercrombie; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and remaining siblings Gladys Lynch, Melford MacLean both of Stellarton; Agnes Peters, Toronto; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by daughter Elizabeth at birth; brothers, Woody and Arthur and seven sisters; Emyline, Laura, Hazel, Pricscilla, Bertha, Elizabeth and Katherine.
He was an adherent of the Sharon St. John United Church, Stellarton.
Remains will rest at H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Wednesday, May 10th, where funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday May 11th, 2017. A reception will follow at the funeral home. Interment will be in Castle Hill Cemetery in MacLellan’s Brook.
