Marjorie ‘Marj’ Hickey

Born: May 12th, 1922

Passed on: May 10th, 2017

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marjorie Ruth Hickey. ‘Marj’ passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her devoted family. She was two days short of her 95th birthday.
Marj was born in Sydney to the late Lou and Christie Ann (Murchison) Moffatt on May 12, 1922.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Stuart; brothers, Arnold and Robert Moffatt, and sister, Evelyn Pollett.
Marj is survived by her children, John (Anne), Antigonish, David, Sydney, Bruce (Janice), Toronto and Alison, Halifax; grandchildren, Evan (Tanya), Toronto, Robyn and Clare, Toronto, and great-grandson, Declan.
Marj grew up in Sydney and attended Sydney Academy. She was always full of fun and ready for any adventure, be it sailing on the harbour in a homemade snipe or flying over Sydney in a single engine plane. At 17, she went to Mt. ‘A’, where she developed her artistic talent in applied arts and also took a secretarial course. Upon returning to Sydney, she worked at the unemployment insurance office. In 1941, she became one of the first women to fly coast to coast on a commercial airline, flying from Sydney to Victoria, BC. After working for a year in Victoria, she returned to Sydney. ‘Mum’ would say she, “met her fate” when she met Stuart, owner and manager of Crowell’s Department Store. They were married in 1947. Marj and Stuart had 53 wonderful years together. They spent many happy summers at their cottage in Ingonish. In later years, Marj enjoyed time in Ingonish with family, including her sister-in-law/friend, Jeanette Moffatt. Marj and Stuart travelled extensively and were very active in their church, St. Andrew’s United. Marj loved to play bridge and belonged to several clubs. She had a tremendously positive outlook on life and she retained her great sense of humour and wry wit to the end. Her sage advice and unfailing love and support will be sorely missed by her children and grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, as well as the staff at Northside At Home Care for their compassionate attention.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 12 from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be to a charity of your choice.
