Angus ‘Gussie’ MacLean

Born: May 30th, 1950

Passed in: Sydney, Nova Scotia
Passed on: May 13th, 2017

On May 13, 2017 the final buzzer sounded for Angus MacLean to make his final resting place in God's Field of Dreams. With loving friends, family, and his precious grandchildren by his side, Gussie passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Gussie was born in Sydney on May 30, 1950 and spent most of his life in East Bay. He was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Jessie MacLean; brother, Billy MacLean, and wife, Bernadette.
Gussie is survived by his siblings, Margaret (Edward) MacArthur, AJ MacLean and Sarah (Bruce) Mitham; sons, Scott (Ariane) MacLean and William (Holly) MacLean; four grandchildren, Alexander, Islan, Andrew and Raya, and loyal companion, Beau.
Everyone knew Gussie as an avid sports fan. After graduating from St. FX with a BSc. In Phys. Ed., he started his 30+ year career as a school teacher at Donkin Morien High School and retired from Malcolm Munroe Jr. High School in 2005. Gussie often took the leadership role organizing sports teams and coaching after school programs. He had a passion for helping students reach their full potential and instilling the mentality to always be there and help others. He always treated everyone fairly and equally, ensuring each person always felt as "part of the team".
Since retiring, Gussie spent his time mowing lawns in summer and shoveling snow in winter. Despite his battle with cancer, he continued to go to "the office" 364 days a year to meet with his Tim Horton's morning crew. Gussie also put in a solid 35+ years volunteering at the East Bay Fire Dept. He spent many evenings at the hall playing darts and cards. Gussie was also famous for his late night firework shows for each Toronto Maple Leafs win. Hockey night in Canada soon became Hockey night at Gussie's, surrounded by close friends and those from East Bay Fire Dept.
Gussie was a true sports dad, trucking his boys all over the island every chance he got. He made sure his boys were given every opportunity. Gussie made it well known how proud he was of his two sons, Scott becoming a doctor, and Will a firefighter. Both sons followed in his footsteps of always wanting to be there to help others. He was an amazing father and husband, always putting his family first.
A piece of East Bay has been taken, as has a piece from anyone's heart who was fortunate enough to cross paths with Gussie MacLean. As Gussie would say, "Things happen for a reason" and "It'll all work out in the end". Gussie has made his mark on this earth, and his soul and good spirit is one that is nothing less than inspirational.
Visitation for the late Gussie MacLean will be Monday, May 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 16 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Church, East Bay with Father Frank Abbass officiating, with interment to follow.
On behalf of Gussie and family, they would like to thank the Palliative Care nurses and staff for their compassion and help through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Palliative Care at Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Online condolences can be made at www.twcurry.com.
