Hildegarde O’Neill

Passed on: May 13th, 2017

Hildegarde O’Neill passed away peacefully on May 13, 2017 surrounded by family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Margaret Ann (MacDonald) MacLean.
Hildegarde attended Acadia University. Following graduation in 1949, she enrolled at the Maritime School of Social Work. As a social worker with the Children’s Aid Society of Cape Breton for 42 years, her keen mind was an invaluable asset when called upon by colleagues. She displayed compassion, professionalism and dedication throughout her career.
Retirement was filled with involvement in various community programs, including volunteering at St. Anne’s School and with Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of St. Anne’s Church, where she contributed to many facets of parish life.
More than anything, Hildegarde enjoyed spending time with family, especially her four grandchildren, and took great pride in everything they did. She was also an avid gardener. When not in the garden, she could often be found reading a book borrowed from the library or completing the daily cryptoquote.
Hildegarde is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Kevin) McNeil, and grandchildren, Daniel (Meggie), Claire, Ellen and John. She is also survived by sisters, Dorothy ‘Micki’ MacLean, Glace Bay, and Doda (Bill) Stewart, St. John’s, NL; brother, Neil (Anna) MacLean, Halifax; along with sister-in-law, Anna Kubik, and brothers-in-law, Vince (Dorothy) O’Neill and Ray McNeil.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack.
Hildegarde and her family appreciated the care and attention provided by Sandra, Donna, Yvonne, Irene, Evelyn, Rose, Marcella and Marlene during her later years.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. There will be no visitation.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with Father Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or a charity of one’s choice.
