DR. ANTHONY R. F.R.S.C PUGH

PUGH, DR. ANTHONY R. F.R.S.C The death of Dr. Anthony R. Pugh, F.R.S.C., Professor Emeritus of UNB (French Department) occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on February 6. He is survived by his wife Mary, by three children Elizabeth (David Regan) of Halifax, David (Karen) of Brantford, Margaret of Vancouver, and by three grandchildren. Born and educated in Liverpool, England, Dr. Pugh attended Cambridge University (B.A 1953, M.A. 1954, PhD 1959). He taught at The University of London King's College and The Queen's University of Belfast before being invited to the position of Full Professor at UNB in 1968. A committed scholar, he published major studies of Balzac, Pascal and Proust and devoted nearly twenty years to an investigation into the manuscripts of Proust which will be published by the University of Toronto Press this spring. Dr. Pugh was best known in the Fredericton community for his involvement in the music scene. He served on the UNB Creative Arts Committee for the whole of his active life at UNB, and wrote countless programme notes. He represented New Brunswick on the Board of Directors of Début Atlantic for many years, as recording secretary and as a member of the selection committee. He was a loyal member of Christ Church Cathedral. There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday February 14 at 2.00pm. A memorial tribute will be held at UNB at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Christ Church Cathedral Restoration Fund or a charity of the donor's choice will be appreciated.
