Age 49

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mike. Surrounded by his loving family, he left us peacefully with the same strength and determination with which he lived his life. He is survived by his loving wife Marina and children Martin (Jen), Clayton (Meaghan), Sarah (Phil), Kirstie, mother Evelyn, father Ronald Joseph (predeceased), brothers Wayne (Joanne and Joshua), Ken (Marsha), father-in-law Romeo Plante, sisters-in-law, Rosalie (Chris), Delorie (Tom), Suzanne (Vic), Giselle (Gordon), brother-in-law Norris (Claudette), grandchildren Preston and Stephanie, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Born in Stephenville, NL, Mike dedicated his life to his two loves - his family and his Naval service. Mike’s incredible selflessness, strength and determination underscored the way he lived. A true sailor and friend to all, Mike served his country well in more than half a dozen ships and shore establishments and most notably as Coxswain of HMCS Algonquin until August 2009. A vigil prayer service was held on Thursday, March 18th at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church, 798 Goldstream Avenue, Langford, BC. Funeral Services will be held on Mike’s birthday, Friday, March 19, 2010 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church, Langford followed by a celebration of life commencing at 1:00 p.m. at the Chiefs and Petty Officers mess, CFB Esquimalt, 1575 Lyall Street, Esquimalt. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society for pancreatic cancer research. The family wishes to give special thanks to Fr. Mike Favero, Doctor Ellen J. Anderson, Nurse Michelle Atchison, Dr. Kate Diskin, Dr. Boylan, Rita Ward, neighbours, friends, shipmates and all those who provided so much love and support to Mike and his family.

“Mike was a terrific guy and will be missed by members of the Mill Bay Dojo. He was a gifted martial artist and a good teacher. I will always remember his workouts, I usually wanted to pass out after the first 15 minutes he was one tough SOB. I didn\'t really know his family but I do wish to extend my condolences and best wishes. I am sure he was a terrific father. ”
