On March 6th, in the early morning of what was to be a beautiful day in Vancouver, my mother Jenny MacGregor gently passed away.
My mother’s parents, Edward and Laina Turunen had three daughters - Hannah, Jenny and Esther. My mother and aunts grew up amongst other relatives and friends in the Finnish community of Sointula, B.C. After completing school, Jenny joined her eldest sister in Vancouver. While there, she enrolled in the School of Nursing at St. Paul’s Hospital, led by the Sisters of Providence.
One evening while attending a dance with friends, Jenny met a tall, handsome Vancouver City policeman named Ian MacGregor (d. 1988). Following an appropriate courtship, they wed. Two years later my brother David (d. 1996) made his appearance and in what, for my mother was an inordinately long wait of six years, I, Elizabeth, arrived.
Jenny was an exceptionally skillful seamstress and was employed in the fashion industry for many years. Her hobbies included creating beautiful silk embroideries and painting. She was also a lover of opera and classical music. She enjoyed travelling and we had many lovely mother-daughter holidays over the years.
With dignity, my mother endured much sadness in her long life but remained a lady until her final day.
Suffer no more my sweet “mamaâ€.
May you be well, happy and peaceful in your next journey.
Love always, Elizabeth and your son-in-law, Robert
I wish to acknowledge the care given to my mother by the B.C. Ambulance Services, the staff and doctors at VGH, as well as her attending physicians, and also to the wonderful staff at The Terraces. Great gratitude to my cousin Beverley Prynalt, along with various relatives and friends who performed many acts of kindness. Thank you all.
If you wish, donations may be made to either The Canadian Diabetes Association or The Heart & Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon, with thanks.
