The death of Elizabeth T. Myrvang of Charlo and formeley of Toronto occurred peacefully at the Dalhousie Nursing Home on Saturday, April 17, 2010. She was 99. Elizabeth Theresa Fitzpatrick was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on March 11, 1911. She was the eldest daughter of Patrick Joseph Fitzpatrick, a native of Starlorgen, County Wicklow, Ireland, and his wife, Catherine Devine McAllister, of Greenock, Scotland. She was one of 12 children and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A number of nieces and nephews survive her in Scotland and England. According to the register of baptisms, Elizabeth was baptized five days after her birth at St. Lawrence's Church in Greenock on March 16, 1911 by Father John O'Callaghan. She lived her early life in Grennock and went to work at a young age. When she was 34 she married Jorgen Myrvang of Norway and took up residence in that country. Her husband predeceased her nine years later. A year following her husband's death she came to Canada because she had a brother living near Montreal. He later died and she was left without relatives in Canada. She worked for Algoma Central Corporation sailing on boats and serving in the dinning room. One of the boats she was on sunk but she escaped loosing all her possessions. When she retired she settled in Toronto. A devote Catholic, she was a member of St. Paul's Basilica Parish in Toronto and attended daily Mass at St. Michael's Cathedral. In Norway when she didn't have a ride, she would walk five miles to Sunday Mass. She was a former member of St. Paul's Parish Council of the Catholic Women's League. She was actively involved in helping the poor with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and other organizations in downtown Toronto. On November 30, 2005 she arrived in New Brunswick where she was invited to take up residence in Charlo with Orin R. M. Brimsacle and his late mother, Catherine, Although she missed the conveniences of the city she loved the Bay of Chaleur. She became a member of St. John Bosco Parish and was a member of it's parish council of the CWL. Following a lengthy period of hospitalization in the summer of 2008, she became a resident at the Dalhousie Nursing Home on July 3, 2008. All her long life she had enjoyed walking and even in the nursing home she walked throughout the residence several times each day.
The remains will rest at Maher's funeral Home, 421 Victoria Street in Dalhousie Tuesday, April 20th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 and Wednesday from 9:30 to time of funeral. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 o'clock from St. John Bosco Church with the Pastor Father William P. Arseneault officiating. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Paul's Basilica in Toronto by long-time friend, Reverend Monsignor Brad Massman, Pastor of St. Paul's, later this month. Interment will take place next to the Brimsacle family plot at St. Gabriel's Cemetery in Jacquet River. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Maher's Funeral Home, Dalhousie.
