Dodds, Donald Gilbert passed away May 5, 2010. He was born October 4, 1925 in North Rose, New York, the son of Wells and Margaret (Langford) Dodds. He was the loving husband of Pearl for almost 65 years and loving father of Tracy (Halifax) and Kathleen (Pictou Landing). His greatest loves after his family and pets were his love of the out-of-doors, the wild lands and wilderness areas wherever he lived or traveled. A keen naturalist, sportsman and environmentalist, he championed the cause of sound resource management until his death. Don graduated from North Rose High School in 1943, attended New York State College of Forestry, Syracuse University and the College of Agriculture at Cornell University, receiving his B.Sc. in biology, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in wildlife management and minoring in forest soils and parasitology. He was a biologist in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, Assistant and Acting Director of Wildlife in Nova Scotia, Visiting Professor, Associate Professor and Professor of biology as well as Dean of Science at Acadia University, where he served 26 years. While at Acadia Don supervised thirty M.Sc. Wildlife students as well as ten B.Sc. Honors, developed an undergraduate wildlife program and worked to obtain a number of valuable research properties on Long Island, Digby Co.; at Hemeon Head, Shelburne Co.; and Bon Portage Island. A fourth property in Lunenburg Co. provided funds for a research fellowship. He also acted as a renewable resource consultant with Eastern Ecological Research Ltd. and Cervid Consulting. Between 1966 and 1985 he served the United Nations Development Program and the Food and Agricultural Organization at various times in Rome, New York City, Addis-Abba, Ethiopia; Nairobi, Kenya; Ft. Jamaieson, Zambia; Maun and Gaborone, Botswana and Port of Spain, Trinidad. He authored more than 40 professional books and papers and numerous United Nations, government and company reports. The third and final edition of a text The Philosophy and Practice of Wildlife Management, co-authored with former student, Dr. Fred Gilbert, was published in 2001. He was a member of a number of professional organizations and committees and received the Wildlife Society's John Pearce Award in 1990, Canada's 125th Commemorative Medal in 1992, and the Atlantic Society of Fish and Wildlife Biologists Wall of Fame Award in 2004 and the Nova Scotia Professional Environmental Award in 1994. He had been a member of Kappa Phi Kappa, National Education Fraternity in the U.S. and Chapter President at Cornell, a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Sigma XI Scientific Honor Society. Don was a member of many professional, conservation, civic and fraternal organizations, including serving as a founding member of the Atlantic Section, Fish and Wildlife Biologists and as a Past President. He had chaired the Northeast Section of the Wildlife Society and been a member of the NS Forestry Advisory Council, the NS Round Table on Environment and Economy, a Director-at-Large of the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Chairman and Director of the NS Resource Council, a member of Voluntary Economic Planning for both Forestry and Fur, Fish, Game and Recreation segments, a member of the Board of Directors at Acadia University Institute, a Director of the Canadian Assoc. on the Human Environment, Associate Chairman of the International Biological Program (Maritimes) and, most recently, chair of the NS Wildlife Advisory Council. He had been a member of the Kentville Lions, Kings Co. Wildlife Assoc., Trappers Assoc., OXFAM Canada (Maritimes), Cornwallis Interchurch Council (Past President) and Steward, Elder and Clerk of Session of the Canard United Church. He had been active in working with young people in relation to the non medical use of drugs, served on the Board of the Fundy Mental Health Clinic and had been active in Home and School organizations. He was also a member of Sircom Lodge, No. 66 AF and AM (Whycocomagh) and a member of Gyros International (Kentville). In addition to his professional publications, he wrote several books, short stories, newspaper columns and articles, plus two books, Wild Captives and A Long Night in Codroy. A former special voice student at Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY, he sang in several choral groups and church choirs, often serving as a soloist. He was also charter member of the Kentville SPEBSQSA. Don often served as a lay pastor conducting church services in River and Lakeside United Churches and in Port Hawkesbury, Port Hastings and Canard. Cremation has taken place with burial at a later date at York Settlement Cemetery, North Rose, N. Y., which is his birth place. No visitation or online condolences by request. A service of thanksgiving for his life was held at the Canard United Church on Sunday, May 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Curtis MacDonald officiating. Family flowers only and donations may be made to The Dr. Donald G. Dodds Wildlife Scholarship Fund at Acadia University, Orangedale United Church, Canard United Church or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
