SPICER, Jean U. - 86, of Halifax, and formerly of Apple River, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Ocean View Manor, Eastern Passage. Born in 1923 at Apple River, she was a daughter of the late Capt. Whit and Winn (Elderkin) Slocum. Jean was medical secretary and office manager to Doctor J.J. McKiggan for many years. She was very active in the Oxford Street United Church in Halifax as Assistant Cub Master at the 22nd Halifax and 3rd Halifax Wolf Cub Packs, and as a strong member of the U.C.W. Jean was both 'Mom' and mentor to many young people who came through her life and were like family to her. She is survived by a son, Floyd (Jo-Ann), Hammonds Plains; sisters, Louise Shipley, Sarnia, Ont.; Marie Embrett (Max), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Steven Spicer, Ryan Spicer, Wendy Brown, Stephanie Thibedeau, Allison Taylor and Cody Spicer; great grandchildren, Ashley and Sydney Spicer; Joseph and Keith Brown; Isaac Taylor; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley; a son, Gary; a sister, Faye; brothers, Floyd and Ray. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today [Tuesday, May 25, 2010] in Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday, [May 26, 2010] in the Advocate United Church, Advocate Harbour, Rev. Greg Doyle officiating. Burial to follow in the Advocate Cemetery. Family flowers only.
