It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on June 2, 2010, of Sarah M. Black of Westmount at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief, and final battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Grand Mira, she was the daughter of the late Joseph V. and Margaret E. Gillis.
As a young women she worked in Ottawa during the Second World War. She returned to Sydney and married the love of her life, Jimmer Black. She was a homemaker most of her life, but did work for a short time at Woolco, and the Canadian Coast Guard College. She loved having her family around her and was a longtime fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Left behind to mourn her passing are her sons, James (Marie) Black, Sydney, Gregory, Vancouver, B.C., and Brian (Jane) Leslie, Dartmouth. She is also survived by her sisters, Stella Fraser, New York, Helen MacNeil, Sydney; brother, Colin (Frances) Gillis, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Genevieve Dalton, Sydney and Adeline Gillis of Boston, Mass and brother-in-law, Leonard Crisp, Arkansas. Also left to mourn her passing is special granddaughter, Renee Black, Sydney, Nicole (James) Leslie-MacQueen, Halifax, Michele Leslie, Florida; great-grandson, Thomas MacQueen; many nieces and nephews as well as her best friends, Lillian Landsburg and Rita Burt.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James A. 'Jimmer' Black, brothers, Lauchie, Duncan and John Allen, sisters, Margaret Crisp and Alberta Black.
The family of Sarah would to thank the staff of 4B, Dr. Jim MacKillop, especially Dr. Jamie Johnstone, Dr. Gowen, Dr. D'Intino and the staff of 4E.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 4 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral mass will take place Saturday, June 5 at 11 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, Westmount with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating.
Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Society or the Palliative Care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
