Our Charlotte passed away peacefully on Monday, June 28, 2010, at the Au Cala Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after her cancer journey.
Born and raised in St. Margaret's Village to the late James and Helen (Dunphy) Curtis, she was the youngest of seven children.
For the past 40 years she lived in Sydney.
She was a devout member of Holy Rosary parish, Westmount.
Charlotte is survived by her loving husband and dearest friend of 33 years, Mike; special goddaughter, Anastacia; brothers, Joseph Curtis (late Margaret), St. Margaret's Village, John Buddy (Muriel) Curtis, St. Georges Channel; sisters; Theresa MacDonald (late John D.), Aspy Bay, Monica (Bruce) McNenly, Sydney Forks; sister-in-law; Carol MacNeil, Sydney. She was a loving aunt to some 23 nieces and nephews; grand-nieces and nephews and great-grand-nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her many devoted and caring friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Mary and Rose.
Charlotte was a graduate of St. Rita Hospital School of Nursing and St. Francis Xavier University.
She served as nursing instructor of Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing and as director of the school. She was well known for her high moral and ethical standards and her professionalism.
The last position, prior to her retirement, was director of quality and risk management for the Cape Breton Healthcare Complex. She served on the board of the Nova Scotia College of Nurses as chair of the education committee as well as numerous positions at chair of the education committee as well as numerous positions at the local, provincial and national level. She was an item writer for the Registered Nurses' Licensing Examination.
Charlotte also found time to be part of the board of directors of Sydney Credit Union as their president. She was a charter member of St. Margaret's Catholic Woman's League and a loyal supporter of Holy Rosary Parish CWL. As a member of Holy Rosary parish, she served as chair of the parish liturgy committee, pastoral planning committee for the Sydney Deanery, parish reader and co-ordinator of adult faith development. Charlotte was a Third Order Carmelite of the Community of St. Elijah and served as community secretary.
Charlotte battled her cancer the same way that she tackled anything in life - straight up and head on. We will miss her positive outlook and influence on others, her ability to laugh, her devotion and constant support to others and the outstanding example of her beautiful faith in God.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all the wonderful caring and compassionate physicians and staff of the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and palliative care.
Visitation for Charlotte will take place Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral liturgy will be celebrated Thursday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount, with Fr. Douglas Murphy officiating.
Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
