LAYTON, Florence Gertrude - 96, formerly of New Minas, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010 in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Toronto, she was a daughter of the late Frank Forsdyke and Myrtle Cole. She received her Secretarial Certificate from the Nova Scotia Business School, Halifax in 1933 and was employed in the Entomology Lab in Annapolis Royal. Following the death of her husband, she recertified in 1968 and became the secretary for the Annapolis Royal Regional Academy. She was a member of St. George and St. Andrew United Church, Annapolis Royal, the United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen, Kentville and was currently a member of the Berwick United Church. She had been active with the United Church Women, the Girl Guides of Canada, the New Horizon's Seniors Group and the hospital auxiliary. She had a passion for music, especially playing the piano and the organ and her talents followed her through school choirs, glee clubs, Sunday school, churches in both Annapolis Royal and Kentville, Evergreen Home for Special Care and most recently, playing the piano for worship services at Fundy Villa. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Ann Van Binsbergen, Granville Centre; Helen Ruth (Louis) Balcom, Bridgetown; a son, Albert (Patricia), Berwick; eight grandchildren, Patricia Balcom, Keltie Van Binsbergen, Allan Layton, Robert Balcom, Kristie Van Binsbergen, Elizabeth Layton, Gerard Balcom and John Layton; 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Lloyd D. Layton; her stepfather, Albert Cole; a sister, Dorothy; an infant sister, Myrtle; a son-in-law, Duco Van Binsbergen. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 in St. George and St. Andrew United Church, Annapolis Royal, Reverend Linda Winton officiating. Burial will take place in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Annapolis Royal. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
