Catherine Jane 'Irene' (MacDonald) Fraser, a retired nurse, died on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, in the Meadow Green Nursing Home, Waltham, after a brief illness. She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Fraser, a daughter of the late Neil J. and Catherine (McNeil) MacDonald, was born in Inverness, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She was raised and educated in Inverness and came to the United States in the 1950s. She trained to be a nurse at the Holy Ghost Hospital, Cambridge and worked in the nursing field for many years in the Boston area.
She was a member of the Canadian-American Club, the Gaelic Club, and the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality of Saint Patrick Parish, Watertown.
She was the beloved wife of the late Sgt. Maj. Daniel J. Fraser, a member of the Cape Breton Highland Division of the Canadian Army who was killed in action during World War II; devoted mother of Georgina F. MacEachern and her husband Jack of Bowling Green, KY, and Daniel D. Fraser and his wife Dolores of New Waterford, Cape Breton; dear sister of Sr. Catherine MacDonald, CND of Sydney, NS, Christina McGillivray of Watertown, Anna Mae McCarthy of New Waterford, NS, and the late Angus Charles 'A.C.' MacDonald, John Alec 'Shorty' MacDonald, and Archie Neil MacDonald.
She was also the loving grandmother of Glenn F. MacEachern, Gail J. Robinson, Danielle M. Kelly, Neila C. Fraser, and A. Christian Fraser; and great-grandmother of Cassie MacEachern, Colin MacEachern, Paige MacEachern, John Robinson, Kaila Kelly, Rebecca Kelly, Brenden Fraser and Jacob Fraser.
A funeral mass of celebration for Irene will take place Friday July 23 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Father Paul MacNeil officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. The Family will receive, visitors, relatives and friends at a luncheon in Irene's honor immediately following in the Parish Hall, 310 Convent St.,New Waterford, all are welcome.
