LAFAVER - Lawrence "Bud"
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bud LaFaver on July 25, 2010 in Prince Albert, SK at the age of 92. Bud was born on June 7, 1918 in the Spring Valley area. His family later moved to their homestead just north of Christopher Lake. His parents died at an early age so he had lots of responsibility to help raise his siblings, as he was from a family of twelve children. Bud enlisted in Jan 1942 for WWII. He trained in Dundurn and Chilliwack, then went overseas in mid June on the Queen Elizabeth. He was a sapper in the Canadian Engineers, 1st Battalion, 34th Field. He served in England, Holland, Belgium, France and then Germany. Once the war was over he returned to England, then back home on the Queen Elizabeth in November 1945. The war was something that he would not discuss, so we can only imagine the horrors he had seen. When he returned he was met by his sister, who brought along a co-worker by the name of Florence Benoit. This meeting led to 61 years of happily married life. They were married November 27, 1948. Bud did several jobs until he started at P.A. National Park in 1952. He continued there for 27 years, retiring in 1978. Highlights of his job were working on Grey Owl's cabin and the hours car-pooling with his co-workers, as he never had his driver's license. Bud and Florence raised 8 children together so there was always a huge garden. Dad loved to be on his tractors working the soil & loved using his one-way for his and the neighbors gardens. He enjoyed taking the children for rides to the dump, loading us all up in the trailer he pulled behind the tractor, sometimes he came home with more than he went with! Dad was a quiet person that took great joy in family get-togethers. He never had much to say but always liked to tease the grandchildren and great grandchildren. He especially liked to box with them & loved watching wrestling on TV; everything was put aside until it was over. He enjoyed the many games of pool he played with his sons and son-in-laws and enjoyed working in the garage building things out of wood. We all have several whirly birds, birdhouses, lawn ornaments and wind chimes. Dad was a fairly healthy man for someone in his nineties. Just over a year ago he broke his hip and was not able to return home. He stayed at Victoria Hospital until January 2010 then resided at Mont St Joseph until the end. He was very well looked after there and put a smile on everyone's face with his humor. Bud is survived by his wife Florence, children; Sharon Hainstock, Denise (David) Miller, Elaine (Rick) Bruce, Yvonne (Gerald) Ernst, Donna (Peter) French and Glenn LaFaver, daughter in law; Debbie (Clint) Mauthe, sister; Loama Smythe, his grandchildren Christopher, Carrie, Denni, Chad, Jody, Kirsten, Candace, Scott, Blair, Camille, Richelle, Charlie, Jessica, Steven, Wilson and Lane, as well as thirteen great grandchildren. Bud is predeceased by his parents; George and Jessie LaFaver, sons; Larry and Ernest, son in law; Duncan Hainstock and numerous brothers and sisters. The family would like to thank the staff of Mont St Joseph's, Victoria Hospital Level 6 and Dr. Surkan for the great care. In Dad's final days the staff at Mont St. Joseph's went above and beyond with food, drinks and utmost compassion for us all. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010 - 11am at Christopher Lake Legion Hall with Rev. Ken Lyons officiating. Interment at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens to follow. Arrangements in care of Northern Funeral Service - MacKenzie Chapel, Brian and Bev Stobbs, Jennifer Wildeman Funeral Director 763-8488
