  • A Steely Eyed EOD Man to The Last

Clayton Cochrane on 13 septembre 2010

“Andy, it was only a few short years ago that you took me under your wing and gave me the mentorship and support of the vastly more expirienced Diving Officer which you were at the time. I will always remember a few of the lessons you taught me and truth be told I still apply some of those lessons every day.

Nearly each Christmas since then we have shared a joke or two at the Annual FDU(P) Christmas Levee and I especially will miss you this coming Holiday Season.

You will always be a "Steely Eyed EOD Man" to me. Rest well my old friend.

    V/R

“It was just a few months ago that you were enjoying a burger and a beer on our deck in Victoria and you were telling us of your new digs and of your adventures in PEI. We were shocked to hear of your passing.

We first met in the UK when you were on exchange. We suffered through your long absences to the Falklands and especially the Royal Marines escape and evasion course. The next day you and Phillipa accompanied us to Buckingham Palace for the Garden Party. Good times, my freind. You'll be fondly remembered by Fran and I. Our deepest condolences to the children.

  • Till we meet again old friend

Bruce Gibbons on 9 septembre 2010

“I met Andy at the Naval Officer Interview Board in Halifax in the summer of 1981. We quickly became good friends as we progressed through BOTC then NOTC and finally joined our first operational ships in the summer of 1983. Andy could always be counted upon for a song at Bart's, the right bower in euchre, and a joke when it was needed. I will remember Andy as a true friend, a great shipmate and a good person. My condolences to his family.”

“We first met some years back in high school -- a meeting that quickly became a good friendship. Andy was the kind of person who was very easy to like because of his 'true blue' nature, honesty, loyalty, and dedication. I am glad that I have only but fond memories of the many fun (and sometimes wild and crazy) times we had. Rest in peace my friend. No more high seas - nothing but clear sailing forever.

Sincere condolences to all family and friends.

“What can I say that hasn't already been said? There was nothing you wouldn't do to help a friend, and nothing fazed you. I have enough memories to last a lifetime. The Pinery trips, your world famous "Whatchagot Stew", playing our guitars and singing for anyone who would listen to us, (I still have a cassette somewhere.) coaching Little League baseball, the memory of you sitting with Will and watching cartoons with him when he was two......the list goes on. Goodbye, old friend, you left us far too soon.

Sincere condolences to your family and friends.

    Much love,

    Tim, Leisa, Andrea and Will.”

“I had the privilege of working for Andy as soon as I arrived at FDU(P) in 96. He was a great boss and a true friend who always helped when you needed it most. Between Andy, Roy and Barry, a young Leading Seaman couldn't have asked for a better introduction to the dive unit. He will be sorely missed. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. GOVERNMENT HOUSE

    MERITORIOUS SERVICE DECORATIONS

The Governor General, the Right Honourable ROMÉO LEBLANC, on the recommendation of the Chief of the Defence Staff, has awarded Meritorious Service Decorations (military division) as follows:

    ...

    Meritorious Service Medal

    (military division)

PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS RONALD SCOTT MCMILLAN,

    M.S.M., C.D.

    LIEUTENANT(N) ANDREW ERIC WALSH, M.S.M., C.D.

    Fleet Diving Unit (Pacific)

On December 8, 1995, PO1 McMillan and Lt(N) Walsh were tasked to provide assistance to the British Columbia Provincial Emergency Program Emergency Coordination Centre. They were dispatched to a hospital in Terrace, British Columbia, where they were exposed to a highly sensitive and unstable explosive chemical that could detonate due to any shock or friction. PO1 McMillan and Lt(N) Walsh determined that the risk to patients was high and that the hazard would have to be removed manually to a suitable disposal site. Hampered by extreme weather conditions which greatly increased the chance of detonation, they removed the contaminated material and explosive chemical from the hospital onto a transport vehicle. Arriving at the disposal site, PO1 McMillan handed the volatile material to Lt(N) Walsh who carried it to a safe detonation point. Both PO1 Class McMillan and Lt(N) Walsh placed their lives at grave risk to ensure the safety of patients who could not be moved. Their actions clearly exceeded the normal call of duty, and their courage and professionalism were in the highest tradition of the principles upon which the Canadian Forces prides itself.

It is so sad to lose you at such an early age. You wrote a song for me called "THE BALAD OF SIGI Q". I will cherish that and other good memories.

I would appreciate hearing from any family members or friends, please.

    Telephone 519 726 6809.

Andy, may you be in a better place without pain.

    You will be missed
