Doug MacDonald passed into New Life on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, in the presence of his family at home after a courageous journey with cancer. Throughout his illness Doug was an inspiration to all as he continued to live with good humor and love of life.
Doug died as he lived, gently, with deep faith and trust in God, with great love for Jesus, and with the grace and peace of the Holy Spirit. Though deeply saddened by the loss of a beautiful husband, father, brother, and friend, we are filled with gratitude for his life, and we are better people for having loved him.
Born Nov. 19, 1949, Doug was raised in Birch Grove, a son of the late Pringle and Pearl MacDonald.
Doug was employed for 42 years in the print shop business, with Brodie Print and the Coastal Courier, retiring from Robertson Print Craft in October of 2009 due to ill health. He met many people through the print shop business and loved sharing in their stories and going the "extra mile" for customers.
Doug had a keen interest in genealogy and enjoyed searching the MacDonald and O'Donnell family trees. He will be most remembered for his love and devotion to his wife and children, his quick wit and sense of humour, his gentle nature and life of quiet service to others.
Doug was an active member of Saint Anne's Church and an honorary choir member.
Doug will be missed by his wife of 32 years, Nina; sons, Ian, Brennan and fiancée Ashley of Halifax; and daughter, Lauren, at home; by brothers, Dwight and wife Linda of Saskatchewan, Roy and wife Nancy, Glace Bay, Donnie, Halifax; and sister, Paulette and husband Hugh Snow of Donkin. Also mourning Doug's loss are mother-in-law, Rita O'Donnell; brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews and his Cursillo Group brothers - Charlie MacDonald, Malcolm MacDonald, Jack Banfield and Rick Alexander.
Doug asked that we thank, for him, the many people who helped our family over the past year - Doug's sister and brothers, sisters and brothers-in-law, especially Ray who was like a brother to Doug, the doctors, nurses, other health professionals and support staff, paramedics, volunteers, pharmacists and technicians, our coworkers, clergy, church and Cursillo communities, neighbours and the many people who prayed for us, and fed us physically, spiritually and emotionally through numerous acts of kindness. We never wondered where God was in our suffering, as we saw and felt God's presence every day through you. We pray your lives will be filled with graces and blessings for your goodness.
Doug wanted us to acknowledge his good friend Charlie who came each day with Eucharist and kept him connected to the world. Your love and devotion went beyond friendship and we are so thankful for you.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation in Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Wednesday, Sept 8, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Anne's Church, Main Street at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept 9. The family will be present in the foyer of the church at 9:30 a.m.
In Doug's memory please make donations to the Palliative Care Service, The Cape Breton Cancer Center, or a charity of choice.

I left home after graduation, so therefore did not have the pleasure to have met you, his family. May God give you all the strength to deal with the loss of such a wonderful man. ”
