Francis 'Angie' Morrison, 84 of Westmount, Cape Breton passed away peacefully at home, June 2, 2009, surrounded by his loved ones.
Francis was born December 30, 1924 in Sydney to Angus and Mary Jane (Rudderham) Morrison. He was the youngest of three children.
He attended school in Sydney and married Mary Lou MacLean in 1959. This past February they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Francis was employed with the N.S. Department of Highways, Tidewater Construction as office manager and was an assessor with the Nova Scotia Government for over 20 years. He also served as a Cape Breton County Councillor and was the president of the Assessors Association.
Francis played softball and hockey in many local leagues, enjoyed watching golf and coached amateur boxing for over 20 years. During his years with amateur boxing, he made many friends and memories that he long cherished. He sat on the executive of Boxing Nova Scotia, was inducted into the Nova Scotia Boxing Hall of Fame and recently became a lifetime member of Boxing Canada for his many years of outstanding volunteer work on behalf of Boxing Canada. He received the Remarkable Seniors Award, the Olympic Volunteer Award and sat on several boards and committees.
He took great enjoyment in cooking and treated his family to many gourmet meals. He enjoyed reading Larry McMurtry novels and cookbooks, listening to music and writing. But most of all, “Gabu” enjoyed being with his grandchildren.
He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend. No words can ever express how much he will be missed.
Francis is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; his daughters, Andree (John) Gracie, and Suzanne (James Ingram) Morrison; grandchildren, Samantha, Nash, Hogan and Redford. He is also survived by his brother, Duncan Morrison; sister, Isabel Mancini; sister-in-law, Thelma Hubley and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Angus Morrison and his mother, Mary Jane Morrison.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held this Friday, June 5, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. Friends and family are invited to gather in the church hall after the service.
Donations in memory of Francis may be made to a charity of choice.

His final journey brought him back to his home he loved in Cape Breton. He agreed with the words of Alexander Graham Bell:
“I have travelled around the globe, I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes, the Alps, and the Highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all.”
