SWENSON - Mrs. Jean Donna Swenson (nee Ham). It is with love and fond memories that we announce the passing of Donna Swenson on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Donna was born at Frontier, SK on October 12, 1930. The daughter of a school teacher, they moved around to small one-room school-houses, living in several small communities in the south including Frontier, Loomis, Claydon and Oxbow. Her youth was spent riding horses bareback, working on the farm and learning the values of self-sufficiency and organization that defined her life. Upon finishing high school, Donna took the long train ride to "Northern Saskatchewan" to attend the Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in Prince Albert. Numerous times she described feeling very claustrophobic amongst all the trees there! Graduating from Nursing in 1954, she married Stan Swenson that same year and began a long and successful career both nursing and mixed farming near Birch Hills, SK. Having grown up in the '30's and not a stranger to hard work, she was a willing participant in learning many new farm jobs - her most memorable milking cows and separating the cream. She was known to say "Never learn to do a job that you aren't prepared to do for the rest of your life!" While raising their two children, Donna was a role model of work ethic - often not coming in from the outside yard and garden work until after dark - only to start the indoor chores - vacuuming, ironing, darning socks until the wee hours of the morning. Volunteering was a way of life for Donna including the Pineland Home Care Board, Saron Lutheran Church and extensively at the Birchview Nursing Home. After losing her beloved Stan in 2002 and in retirement she was happiest doing kind deeds for friends and cheering on her 6 grandchildren in their endeavors. Donna is survived by her loving children Murray (Ramona) Swenson and Karen (Darren) Toews; her grandchildren: Bailey, Laura, Scott & Trent Swenson; Kira & Emily Toews. Her brothers: Roy (Sharlene) Erickson, Stephen (Sheila) Erickson; her sister: Judy (Roger) Goulet. Her brothers-in-law: Sam Switzer, Cliff (Myrtle) Swenson, Harvey Swenson, Vern (Ruby) Swenson; Sisters-in-law: Alma Swenson, Lorraine (Jack) Diesen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Donna was predeceased by her father Harry Ham, step-father Stewart Erickson and her mother Shirley Erickson (nee Stephens); Sister Betty Switzer, her sister-in-law Inez Nelson, her brother-in-law Leslie Swenson & Con Nelson and her nephew Chris Diesen & niece Dana Swenson. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donation may be made to the Birchview Nursing Home Auxiliary. Visitation on Friday, September 10, 2010 at 7:00 pm at Saron Lutheran Church. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 1:30 pm in Lake Park Baptist Church, Birch Hills, SK with Pastor Dave Hesje officiating. Interment Saron Cemetery. Arrangements in care of Northern Funeral Service-MacKenzie Chapel, Brian & Bev Stobbs, Jennifer Wildeman Funeral Directors. 763-8488
