It is with great sadness that his children announce the passing of their dad, Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Doug was born Oct. 12, 1923, to John R. and Elizabeth (Mac Lean) Mac Dougall in Whitney Pier.
He joined the army in 1941, and served overseas with the First Canadian Army. He was wounded in the Italy Campaign.
Upon his return to Cape Breton he began his working career at the Sydney Steel plant retiring in 1982. In 1946 he married Marie Mac Donald and in 1949 they moved to Westmount. Together they raised five children and he will always be remembered as a generous and loving dad. Doug was a devoted member of Holy Rosary parish for over 60 years and his faith was unwavering. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Westside Legion branch 126.
Doug enjoyed watching baseball, attending the Screaming Eagles games with Junior, and visiting his friends, but his greatest joy was his family. He and Marie took great pride in all their children's accomplishments. In March 2010, Marie passed away short of 64 years of marriage.
Doug is survived by sons, John (Anita), Bedford, Joe (Elaine), Winnipeg and Ron (Lorna), Stonewall, Man.; daughters, Mary Barrett, Dartmouth, and Elizabeth (Clark) Acker, Shelburne; grandchildren, Jolaine, Sarah, Colleen, Andrea, Allison, Stephen, Kevin, Michelle, Douglas, David and Meghan; great-grandchildren, Neige, Autumn, Toufic, Rhian and Mia.
Doug was the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by brothers, Hugh, Rannie, Danny, Angus, sisters, Francis, Margaret, and three in infancy, and son-in-law, Roger Barrett.
Visitation for the late Mr. Mac Dougall will take place Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, in Holy Rosary Church, Rev. D. Murphy officiating with interment in parish cemetery, Westmount.
The family would like to acknowledge special friends, Carol and Bernard Ludyka, for their devoted support to both Marie and Doug over the past many years.
