Edward Faulkner

FAULKNER, Edward A. "Red" - 70, of Amherst passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2011 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Lethbridge, Alta., he was the son of the late Alfred and Leona "Fern" (McNeely) Faulkner. Red was a graduate of LCI in Lethbridge. While there, he played four years of collegiate football with the LCI Rams. Also, he was the Alberta Novice Gymnastics Champion in 1954. He later enrolled in the RCAF as a Recreation and Physical Education specialist serving for 11 years. During his service, he was the NCO in charge of the RCAF Ground Search and Rescue at various bases. Red later returned to Nova Scotia where he farmed in the Parrsboro area for a short time, before being employed by the Town of Amherst for 30 years as the Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Director, retiring in 2002. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially spending time at his hunting camp near Parrsboro. Most of all, he enjoyed the time spent with family and friends, particularly his grandchildren. He is survived by his sons, Craig (Karen), Ft. Smith, NWT; Steve (Kim), Rankin Inlet, Nunavut; grandchildren, Morgan, Iziah, Jenna, Connor and Parker; a sister, Arlene Williams, Cranbrook, B.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Brenda (Brown) Faulkner in July of 2010. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday [February 5, 2011] at Trinity United Church, Parrsboro, Keith Selwyn-Smith, D.M. officiating. Burial in the Parrsboro United Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Terry Fox Foundation. He will be dearly missed by friends and family.
