Joe Anthony

Joseph Anthony
1917-2011
Joseph Anthony was born to Priscilla Anthony in the home of his grandparents Jesse and Helen Anthony in Robert’s Arm on February 18, 1917. In 1934 he married Amelia (Millie) Pearce of Westport and together they welcomed 15 children. After Amelia’s passing in 1987, he married Olive Colbourne until her death nine years later. Seven of his children have also predeceased him.
Beginning his work life as a fisherman at age 13, Joe soon became involved with the logging and pulpwood industry. He recounts some of his experiences in his recent book, Joe of the Deep Woods. Yet he made time for his family and community. He was a devoted husband, father, and member of the Salvation Army, but also served as mayor, secretary of the Amalgamated School Board, member of the Integrated School Board, and Green Bay Development Association.
For the past seven years he has been a resident at Valley Vista Senior’s Home in Springdale from which he was Promoted to Glory on Friday, February 25, 2011—just one week after celebrating his 94th birthday. He is survived by two daughters, six sons, 38 grandchildren, 41 great- grandchildren, and four siblings.
On February 28, 2011 Uncle Joe was laid to rest. To accommodate the large crowd, the funeral service was conducted from Word of Life Tabernacle, with Lt. Tina Dominaux and Major G. Lacey officiating. Pallbearers were sons Andy and Percy, grandsons David Miller, Max Anthony, and great-grandsons Jamie Hibbs and Anthony Miller. Interment followed at the Salvation Army Cemetery. Known for his integrity, endless energy and Christian witness he will be most dearly missed.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Gail Noel and Harry Oxford of Green Bay Funeral Home.
