We the family announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather at Taigh Na Mara at the age of 93 on Sunday, March 27, 2011.
Born at Cape Sable Island, he was the son of the late Howard A. and Estelle (Penney) Christie.
On Oct. 8, 1939, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army (Artillery), where he served under the Queens Own Rifles as a corporal and sniper. After he served in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Continental Europe, he returned to civilian life on Sept. 3, 1945. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 126, Westmount.
He was employed at the former Cape Breton Hospital for many years.
Clifton is survived by his son, Gary H. (Margo) Christie, Sydney, their children, Ryan and Cory, Sydney, Gary Raymond, St. John’s, N.L.; daughters, Beverly (Anley) Ells, Wolfville, their son, Kipp Douglas (Natalie) and their children, Larissa and Cassidy; Evelyn (the late John A.) MacNeil, Westmount. He is also survived by his dear friend and sister-in-law, Lil Campbell, Westmount; sister-in-law, Tena (Alfred) Penney, Massachusetts; brothers-in-law, Duncan Morrison, Halifax, Cecil Campbell, Sydney; special niece and friend, Sheila Swinnen; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Frances Mildred (Campbell), sisters, Ella and Madeline, brother, Alfred, son-in-law, John A. MacNeil, sisters and brothers-in-law, Ivy Morrison, Henry and Margurite Clements, Ruby Campbell, Humbert and Marion Gentile, Robert Jeffery, Douglas Campbell, nephews, Floyd Douglas and James Campbell.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 29 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 30 in the funeral home chapel. Reception to follow. Interment to take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
