Carol Elizabeth (nee Henson) Chandler

Carol Elizabeth Chandler (nee Henson), beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 81, on May 8th 2017, as a result of stroke. Left with cherished memories are son, Graham Henson Chandler, Halifax; daughters, Peggy Chandler (David Stephens), Toronto; Leslie Chandler (Ronald Batt) Moncton/Nunavut; sisters, Jane Henson (Edward MacDonald) Halifax; Catherine Bull (Toronto); grandchildren, Danielle (Kyle Fehr) and Chantelle Stephens, Meredith and Adrian Batt, and honorary granddaughter, niece Katie MacDonald, nephew, John Bull (Shannon) and family; and cousins Lolly Fullerton (Brian), Christine (Lewell) Cameron, Sandra (Lewell) Himelman and Kevin Lewell. She was predeceased by her husband Donald Chandler, parents Guy and Elizabeth (Groom) Henson, and brother Frank Henson.
Carol loved to explore ideas and pose questions and alternative points of view, broadening the thrust and scope of our thinking. Wherever she lived, she brought friends and family together for many wonderful meals around the dining room table accompanied by lively debate, challenging us always to be our best and to consider the needs of others. She possessed innate, razor sharp political insight, and was passionately interested in social and economic justice. She felt it was important to teach her children not what to think, but how to think, to be independent minded and logical thinkers. A tremendous conversationalist, an ardent listener, and a master wordsmith – all her letters are cherished possessions, especially those she wrote to friends and family relating the experiences of our family’s adventures while living in Damascus, Syria, Tiberias, Israel, and Surrey, England from 1972 to 1974 when Dad served as a United Nations Military Observer on the Golan Heights and completed his naval career at CFB Lahr, Germany.
Fond memories from Carol’s youth were of times when she and Frank rowed a boat across the Northwest Arm from Jollimore to attend school in Halifax and when she swam across the Arm at the age of 12. She also greatly enjoyed a year living in Toronto with dear Uncle Ralph, Auntie Martha and her Henson cousins while attending Branksome Hall in Grade 12.
Wherever Carol lived, volunteering was an important aspect of her life. She canvassed regularly for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Cancer Society and was honoured as a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters. She supported the arts as a keen lifelong concert attendee, particularly of the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival every August, and as an avid promoter of local artisans and their work. She was also an accomplished seamstress and greatly enjoyed needlework pursuits of all kinds.
To the entire staff at the Berkeley Gladstone in Halifax where she had been resident since August of 2o14, we wish to express our deepest gratitude for the outstanding care and support Carol received. She appreciated so much the visits and talks she shared with many of the staff. To the staff at the QE II Emergency Department, the nurses and respiratory therapists on CV ICU, we are so grateful for the attention and care which you provided our mother and family in our time of need. Thank you!
Donations in Carol’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice, or to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy, or Sheltering Animals in Distress (SHAID), Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
Family and friends are invited for a celebration of Carol's life on Thursday, July 13th at 2:00pm at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg.
