It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Willhelmina ‘Mientje’ Adriana Campbell (Cox), announce the passing of our Mother (and Nanny) on Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Mientje was born on January 18, 1946 in Meyel, Holland to the late Bill (Opa) and Maria (Nanny) Cox.
She is survived by daughter, Shannon; sons, Dhiarmid and Glenn; sisters, Joanne, Gasha, Lenie, Melisha and Reitje; brothers, Leo and Peter, and six grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother, Jackie.
She emigrated from Holland on December 2, 1952 on a boat with her family short years after the end of World War II and landed at Pier 21 in Halifax. Her Father purchased a farm in Long Hill, Baddeck (Beignn Bhreagh) in 1953 and the family started a farm.
Mientje moved to Truro at the age of 18 and accepted work as a house Mother at the youth center where she also taught art to children. She met her soon to be husband George there and they were married on November 26, 1966.
Mientje and George moved to Sydney and purchased a house in 1971. She accepted a new job with Employment Insurance of Canada where she had a successful career of 30 years with the Public Service.
Mientje loved her summers with George at Lake Ainsle where they spent many nights with friends and family. She had a love for gardening but most of all she loved her family. She will always be loved by us all as a Mother (and sibling) who always put family above all else. She will always be in our hearts.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Mientje will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held the following day, Friday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River, with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Reception to follow at Chant's Funeral Home.
