It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Hazel Valencha Johnston, age 89, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland on June 12, 1928, Hazel was the daughter of the late Aaron and Elizabeth (Best) Shepherd. Hazel worked for many years in retail, first at Ingraham’s United and then later at Zellers, North Sydney until she retired. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney and volunteered at the Northside Community Guest Home.
She is survived by her two daughters, Pauline (Conrad) Larade, Sydney and Betty (Jack) Van Roestel, Woodsville, NS, and one son, Ernie (Jeannie) Johnston, Lower Canard, NS; her seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; her brother, Charlie Shepherd and sister, Harriet Scott, both of North Sydney, and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Johnston, and her sisters, Ellen, Winnie and Marion.
The family would like to thank special neighbors Keith and Sibbie Moores, and Steve Clarke for always watching out for Hazel, to Dr. Peter Poulos for the many years of caring for our mother, to the nursing staff of 4East and 2West at Northside General Hospital and to all of Mom’s friends who transported her and played cards with her the last number of years.
Visitation for Hazel will be held 1-2:45 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 18 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
