It is with great sadness that we, the family of Neil Francis MacLennan announce his passing on April 16, 2011, at the Veteran’s Wing of Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in Benacadie, he was the son of the late John and Christena (MacNeil) MacLennan.
Neil worked at the steel plant for many years until his retirement. He lived with his family in his much loved Benacadie until ill health brought him to Sydney in 2007. Dad was an avid fisherman and spent many hours fishing the Benacadie River.
A true Cape Bretoner, he loved the Scottish music and enjoyed the dances. He was a member of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society. He was also a member of the AA society for over 59 years. Dad was a veteran of the Second World War serving in #1 Company Canadian Forestry Corps. While overseas he served in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He spent six months in the American 1st Army, on loan.
Neil is survived by daughters, Rodena (Hector) MacDonald, Sydney River, Leona (David) Fraser, Ontario, Jeanette (Donnie) Gordon, Dartmouth; sons, Bernie, China, John and Cecil, Benacadie; seven grandchildren, Ken and Kyle MacNeil, Rodney and Janet Lynn Fraser, Neil, Alison, and Ainsley Gordon; as well as six great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Phillips, Emerson, Finley, Mila and Clara MacNeil and Rachel Fraser. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Elizabeth Gillis, Glace Bay, Theresa Gills, Sydney; and brother, Dan (Isabelle), Benacadie.
Neil was predeceased by his wife, Aggie, son-in-law, Melvin MacNeil, sisters, Mary Anne, Josephine, Kaye, brothers, Angus Dan, Malcolm, Alex, Jackie, Mick, Angus ‘Iah’ and Alex in infancy.
Visitation will take place at St. Barra Church, Christmas Island, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 19. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20 at St. Barra Church. Interment to follow in church cemetery.
Thank you to the staff of the Renal Dialysis Unit for all your care, compassion and friendship shown to Dad while in your care over the years, also to Harbour View Veteran’s Facility for your caring manner shown to dad during his time with you. You are all very special people. God bless you.
