Ethel Clarke

Date de naissance : 22 janvier 1915

Date de décès : 20 septembre 2017

Ethel Clarke, age 102, of New Campbellton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born at home in Cape Dauphin on January 22, 1915, she was the eldest child of Malcolm and Rachel (MacLennan) Clarke. Her early education was in the one room school house there. As a child, she lived awhile on the Bird Islands where her father was lighthouse keeper and recalled walking across drift ice to Cape Dauphin.
As a young woman, she worked at the lobster factory, Big Bras d'Or and in a cannery in the Annapolis Valley. Ethel's journey took her to Waltham, Mass. where she worked for many years as a nursing assistant with severely disabled children. She treated these dear children as her own, with love and kindness.
She came home often for Cape Breton vacations with suitcases packed full of travel souvenirs and gifts from Boston shopping expeditions to Filene's. A highlight of her life of faith was a trip to the Holy Land in the 1960s.
On retirement Ethel returned to New Campbellton where she lived independently, past her 100th birthday, in her little house on the hill. Ethel thanked the Good Lord daily for her many blessings and long life. She enjoyed gardening, walking, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and baking. Many friends and family will treasure the thoughtful gifts she made and remember her generosity to many causes.
Her fashions and signature hats, and love of a good cup of tea or coffee with sweets, will be fondly remembered by all who met her at church and community events or visited her home.
Ethel is survived by her nieces, Virginnia (Richard) Murray Butts and Sandra Bain, and many cousins, including her close friends, Pearl Colvey and Debbie Cann.
Besides her parents, Ethel was predeceased by a brother, Daniel; sisters, Jennie (Austen) Murray and Catherine (Sandy) Bain.
The celebration of her life will be held at St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d'Or on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Peter MacDonald officiating. Visitation with family will begin there at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, with a reception to follow in the church basement.
Donations can be made to the charity of choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
Revelation 14:13
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them!”
