Gary Muir Cavanaugh

CAVANAUGH, Gary Muir – 72, Truro, most recently of Pictou, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2017, at his home in Pictou. Born in Upper North River, he was the son of the late Gladys (Cavanaugh) McNutt and step son of the late Foster Avery McNutt. Gary worked many years at Crossley Carpets as a foreman in the Dye House. He was a loving husband to Audrey (McRae) Cavanaugh and an incredible father to his two boys, Derick and Marc. Despite working shift work, Gary was actively involved in his boys’ life. For many years he coached and encouraged many children in the North River area, providing a positive influence on them and being a role model for his own. A passionate hockey fan, Gary loved his Habs, was an avid follower of Truro Bearcats and spent hours enjoying and watching the team closely with his grandson, Tyler, who became an avid fan and part of their culture. In later years Gary found his way to Alberta and spent 10 years there living with and sharing life with Darlene Carlson Belle. He returned home in 2015 to enjoy some more time with his family; time his family is forever grateful for. Gary is survived by his elder sister, Carol MacNutt; two sons, Derick (Rhonda) and Marc (Angela); grandchildren, Tyler, Kathleen, Liam; step grandchildren, Melissa, Nicole, Ashley, Justin; many nieces and nephews who he was very fond of and loved to tease; many cousins and friends, too many to mention, but all well-loved. Along with his parents, Gary was predeceased by his younger sister, Sharon Spears. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall - Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Gary’s family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2017. Private family interment in Blackmore Memorial Cemetery, Upper North River. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gary’s memory to Blackmore Memorial Cemetery are welcomed. Private messages of condolence can be sent to the family by viewing Gary's obituary on-line and selecting "Send A Condolence" at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
