Ernest Day

Ernest Edward Douglas Day, 78, of Shelburne, Nova Scotia passed away 10th October 2017, peacefully at home with family by his side. Douglas was born on 6th July 1939 in London, England to the late Ernest Day and Winifred Arnold, growing up in wartime London with his mother and step-father Alexander Edgar. He was the first of his family to attend university, earning his bachelors and doctoral degrees from the universities of Leicester and Sheffield, respectively. Having met during their time in Leicester while both taking postgraduate certificates in education, he married Judith Ann Welbourne in Chislehurst, England in 1963 before immigrating to Canada in 1967 where they started and raised a family. After university and government positions in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Ottawa, Ontario, he chaired and helped form the Department of Geography at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he spent 26 years in teaching, programme development, and research. He contributed greatly to the Halifax community throughout the 1970s and 80s by helping found and grow two youth soccer clubs and acting as President of Halifax Youth Soccer. Retirement took him to Shelburne, Nova Scotia where he and Judy lovingly restored their Loyalist Heritage home and formal garden and became avid antique collectors and business owners. Loving husband, father and grandad, he will be greatly missed by his wife Judy; his children Simon, Tara and Graeme and their spouses Sandra, Sebastian, and Aileen; grandchildren Aidan, Mackenzie, Spencer, Clara, Leela and George, and his loyal Shetland sheepdog Frisky. The family plan to have a celebration-of-life memorial in the spring of 2018. Further details may be available through the Trinity United Church in Shelburne. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada or a charity of your choice. On-line condolences may be sent to: hmhuskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net
