It is with great sadness the family of Ada (Barnes) Green announce her passing at the age of 85 on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at the Northside General Hospital, following a brief illness. Born in Harbour Mille, Fortune Bay, NL, on January 3, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Levi and Elsie (Dodge) Barnes. Ada was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt.
Upon moving to Nova Scotia from Newfoundland, Ada was employed at the Moir’s Chocolate Factory in Halifax and in later years the Carmichael Guest Home in North Sydney and also babysitting over the years. She was a very active and faithful member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, serving on the Altar Guild for many years and was an active member of the ACW until her recent illness. She was also head of the Funeral Reception Committee for a number of years.
Ada was a member of the Orange Lodge and was Grand Mistress of the Sydney LOB. She was a member of the North Sydney Pensioners Club holding many offices over the years and she also loved going to the Senior Day Care Program in Sydney Mines.
Ada is survived by her children, Eileen (Ross) MacVicar, New Glasgow, Kevin (Debbie) Green, Ottawa and Cecilia (George) MacDonald, Sydney Mines; her grandchildren, Jessica and Duncan MacVicar, Jeffrey and Nicole Green, Jonathan, Mikalia, MacKenzie and Luca Green, and two great-grandchildren, Eli and Mia Green. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, extended family members, Danny (Sheila) MacDonald, Georgina MacDonald, Derek and Helen (MacDonald) Pye, David MacDonald and Sylviane Trudell.
Ada was predeceased by her devoted and loving husband, Cecil; her son, John; infant twin sons, Cecil and Clayton; her sisters, Phoebe Evans and Janet Freeborne, and brothers, George and John Barnes.
Ada was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
The family wishes to thank the Continuing Care caregivers, nursing staff on 5East at the Northside General Hospital and Dr. Patrick O’Grady for their care and compassion shown to Ada and her daughter Cecilia, and thanks to a special friend Margaret Marks.
Visitation for Ada will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Friday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Reception to be held in the church basement following the burial.
