James ‘Squint’ Dicks

With sadness, we, the family of James Edward ‘Squint’ Dicks, regret to announce his passing on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at his residence at MacDougalls Court in Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, with his family and friends by his side.
Born October 7, 1935, in Sydney, he was the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Gaskell) Dicks.
Until retirement, Papa worked at Sydney Steel. Papa`s love of harness racing started as a second generation trainer & driver, which continued until his disease took over. He passed that love on to the third and fourth generations of his family, who will continue the legacy. Papa was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138, Ashby and a longtime member of Standard Bred Canada.
Papa is survived by his children, Rose Leahy (Gary), Sydney, Lisa Kennedy (Derrick), Little Lorraine, James (Doreen), Little Lorraine, Mike (Sheila), Edmonton, AB, Keith, Vancouver, BC and Carol, Little Lorraine; sisters, Rose Deveaux, Jean Oakley, Karen Brandon and Jessie Lackie; brothers, Lloyd, George and Sammy; special “little buddy”, Aidan; 17 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Gladys; former wife, Catherine Anne Dicks; brothers-in-law, Alphonse Deveaux and Richard Brandon, and sister-in-law, Cheryl.
Visitation and reception will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, October 28 from 4-8 p.m. Private family service and interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer`s Society.
The family would like to send out a huge thank you to the staff of MacDougall Court for the wonderful care that was provided to ‘Papa’ during his last years.
