It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Donna (Smith) Hooper, age 52, passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Reginald ‘Red’ and Barbara ‘Bobby’ (McIntyre) Smith.
Donna worked at Tompkins Memorial School for years where she enjoyed being with the kids each day and developed many friendships. She also enjoyed dispatching for the Cape Breton County Trucker’s Association. Donna was a member of St. Joseph’s parish; teaching religious education when her children were young. As an early teen, Donna loved being a member of Cadets. In the past several years, she loved shopping excursions to the US and traveling south. One of her favourite events was the annual family long weekend where her amazing sense of humour shined through.
Donna’s true love in life was her husband, Gary, who was always by her side. Donna’s most proud accomplishments were her two amazing children, Tara and Jarrett. She lived and loved for her two children. Donna was also very excited about the upcoming birth of her second grandchild, Rory Reginald who will be brother to Khloe.
Besides her parents, Donna is survived by her husband, Gary Hooper; daughter, Tara Smith (Kenny Bert), Reserve Mines; son, Jarret Smith, Ontario; sisters, Barbara Smith (Graham Fequet), Glace Bay and Nancy MacLean (Jim), Halifax; brothers, Reggie (Marion), New Brunswick and Joe (Tracey) (Rohrback), New Brunswick; brother-in-law, Glen (Betty Lou) Hooper, and sister-in-law, Gail (Gordon) Leighton. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Khloe; grandnephew, Austin; three special nieces, and three special nephews.
She was predeceased by her mother-in-law, Joyce, and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
Visitation for Donna will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2017 from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
The Funeral Mass will take place in St. Josephs Church, Reserve Mines on Monday at 11 a.m. followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating.
Donations can be made to the Tompkins Memorial Elementary School or to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre.
