It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Agnes Aileen Hayes (Crosby), loved and treasured wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. Agnes passed away at 73 years of age on December 2, 2017 at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her husband and daughter by her side.
Agnes was the daughter of Robert and Frances (MacIntosh) Crosby of Argyle Street, Glace Bay.
Agnes is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Bernard Hayes; her adoring daughter, Aliesje and her husband Jay MacInnis, and her pride and joy, her grandchildren, Keagan and Conner MacInnis. Agnes is also survived by Bernie’s children, Nancy and Robbie Hayes and Robbie’s children, Kristen and Matthew Hayes; her siblings, Betty Currie, Mary Crosby, Ronald (Norma Steele) Crosby and Frankie (John) Darragh; dearly loved nieces, Francine (Sean) Burke and Meggie (Glenn MacIntosh) Currie; nephew, Karl (Lisa) Crosby; grandnephew and grandniece, Liam and Cate Burke; mother-in-law, Simone Hayes; sister-in-law, Irene Anderson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gordon and Sharon Hayes and their children; numerous cousins and many treasured friends.
In addition to her parents, Agnes was predeceased by her father-in-law, Bernard Hayes Sr.; brother, Bob Crosby; brother-in-law, Leonard Currie, and much loved fur babies, Leon and Pebbles.
Agnes began her career as an X-Ray Technologist in 1965 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay, retiring from the Glace Bay Hospital in 1996 and later returning to work at Buchanan Memorial Hospital in Neil’s Harbour before retiring again. Agnes loved her job and formed many lasting friendships, enjoying many work functions and X-Ray conventions where she danced the night away.
Agnes treasured time with her family and friends, enjoying holiday dinners where she prepared delicious meals, especially her crepes; Sunday suppers at Betty’s; Saturday outings for lunch and shopping; winning at the Casino; and, in the past, Friday nights with her sisters at the Front Office.
Family flowers only. In Agnes’ memory, donations may be made to D-Camps, the diabetic camps her grandson Keagan loves so much (dcamps.ca, NS office 1-800-326-7712) or to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, December 7, 2017 at St. Anne’s Church, Main Street, Glace Bay with Father Anthony O’Connor officiating. There will be a reception to follow in the church foyer directly after the service.
