Roland Clarence Peddle from St. John's Newfoundland passed away peacefully at his residence in Lethbridge Alberta on December 7th., 2017, with family by his side. Left to remember and cherish his 86 years of life are his beloved wife of 58 years, Barbara, daughter Janice, son Derek; Janice’s husband Andrew Kurmey and children Aaron (Sara) and Lauren; Derek’s wife Pauline and children Mahaliah and Makizak; sister-in-law Bernice Verbree, and a large circle of relatives and friends. Roland was predeceased by his parents Muriel and Roland Chesley Peddle, and sister-in-law Lilla Barron. A devoted family man, Roland taught Chemistry, Biology and Earth Science at Bishops College High School in St. John’s for 27 years, from 1959 until retiring in 1986 as the last of the original staff. He earned Bachelors (1959, 1973) and Masters (1980) degrees, all from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Roland was also active in Amateur Radio for over 65 years (VO1BD, VE6RL; VO QSL Manager; Honourary Life Member, S.O.N.R.A.) and was inducted into the Canadian Amateur Radio Hall of Fame in 2017. Roland has authored the book “Marconi to the Mobile Age: A History of Amateur Radio in Newfoundland and Labrador”, which is due for publication in 2018. Roland’s next chapter of education and science has begun. At his and the family’s request, Roland’s body has been donated to the University of Calgary School of Medicine for educational purposes, after which his remains will be cremated and returned to the family. A long time member of St. Thomas’ Anglican Church in St. John’s, he and Barbara joined St. Augustine’s Anglican Church when they moved to Lethbridge Alberta in 1997. A Memorial Church Service will be held at St. Augustine’s, 411-11 St. S., Lethbridge Alberta on Thursday December 21st., 2017 at 2:30p.m., with the Reverend Canon James Robinson officiating.
