Gordon Barron Cann, 95, (formerly of Howie Center) passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William Henry and Kate (MacDougall) Cann.
Gordon graduated from Sydney Academy in 1940. For two years, he worked at Moffatt’s Garage, as well as Moffatt’s Grocery Store. In 1942, he joined the RCAF, where he earned his pilot’s wings and became a flying instructor under the British Commonwealth Air Training Program. Following the Second World War, Gordon went to work at Scotia Wholesale as a salesman, retiring after 42 years as general manager. For years, Gordie was an avid golfer and a very active member of the Lingan Golf and Country Club. He was very proud of his “Hole in One”!
Gordon was predeceased by his wife, Josephine “Jo” (MacLean) and brothers, Seward, John and William. He is survived by his sister, Marion, Sydney and sisters-in-law, Jackie, Delores, Hughena and Anne; brother-in-law, Andy and their families. Many nieces, especially his niece, Judy; nephews, cousins and friends will have fond memories of “Gordie”.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. At Gordie’s request, there will be no service or visitation and interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
