Joseph Thomas “Joe” Burke

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Joe, at home, on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at the age of 79.
He was the son of the late Joseph “Tim” and Catherine “Belle” Burke.
Joe was a successful businessman who began his career at the age of 13 and retired as co-owner of Charlie Joe’s Furniture. During his lifetime, Joe coached minor hockey, was a member of the Sydney Kinsmen Club and was a member of the Lingan Golf and Country Club, where he made lifetime friends.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Katherine “Kate”. He is also survived by his cherished granddaughters, Ashley (Rufus) and Riley; daughter-in-law, Kristine; step-grandchildren, Shelby and Kristian. Also left to mourn are brothers, Peter, David and Darrell; sisters, Catherine, Pidge and Delores and many nieces and nephews, who knew him as the “Godfather” of the Burke family.
He was predeceased by his only son, Greg and brothers, Sonny, Sandy and Manzie.
Funeral service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11 a. m., with Rev. Frank Abbass officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sydney’s VON Day Program, where Joe spent many afternoons with old and new friends or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
