With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our father at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala unit on Wed., Jan. 17, 2018 surrounded by his loving children. He was 94 years young.
Born in Greenspond, Newfoundland, July 19, 1923 he was the son of the late Maude (Pickford) Janes and Andrew Janes.
At the age of 15 he immigrated to Cape Breton, Canada and made his home in Glace Bay. Before he settled here permanently he served with the Merchant Marines when he was 17 he found himself on a ship that was part of a convoy to Great Britain with supplies for World War 11. He would make three voyages in service with the Merchant Marines before returning to Cape Breton.
After the war he met and married the late Mary Marguerite (Martin) Janes and they began their family.
He is survived by daughters, Lorraine Slykhuis, Gert Boudreau, Roxanne Wilson and his very special daughter, Frances Janes at home; sons, Andrew, Eddie, Charles, and Fred Janes (Charlene). He is survived by brother, Howard; sisters, Jerusha (George) Roberts, Sharon (Emile) Fournier.
He is predeceased by daughter, Claudine; sons, Frank Jr, Johnny; granddaughters, Alexis Gillis, Arden Wikberg; grandsons, Terry Wilson Jr. and Rene Whyte; sons-in-law, Terry Wilson Sr, Larry Slykhuis and George Boudreau. Frank was predeceased by brothers, Charles, Baxter, Clyde; and sisters, Patricia Janes, Claudine Hussey, and Barb Brownell.
He was employed for 40 years with Sydney Steel in the Open Hearth department. For many years he operated the canteens at the Glace Bay Miners Forum. Our father was an avid hunter, loved hockey and boxing, he enjoyed skating and walking especially around the Brook which earned him the nick name “The Mayor of Renwick Brook”. But his greatest joy was his family there was always room at his table. To us his 11 children he was known as Dad to his 26 grandchildren, their friends, 41 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren he was simply known as Poppy.
A visitation for Frank will be Sunday Jan 21, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS, 902-849-4199.
