Freda Robb

Freda Robb

Date de décès : 1er février 2018

Freda Robb of Sydney River passed away peacefully on February 1, 2018 at age 94, in the Palliative Care Unit of Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Freda was born in Westville, Nova Scotia to the late George Elliot Dawson and Lucy (Hale) Dawson. She attended Acadia University and then college in Halifax, after which she worked as a lab technician in Shelburne, NS. There she met and married Dr. Donald Robb. In 1961, they moved to Cape Breton.
Freda was an avid gardener, involved for over 50 years with the Westmount Garden Club and the Nova Scotia Association of Garden Clubs. In 2006, she was named Atlantic Canada Gardener of the Year. She loved travelling and exploring, especially with Donald, whether it was side roads of Nova Scotia or a garden in England. Wherever she went she carried a deep interest and curiosity in culture and history. She was a supporter of the Old Sydney Society and a member of the Cape Breton Naturalists Society, the Nova Scotia Bird Society, and the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens Society. Books were a mainstay of life, and before the days of internet, the basement full of books was “the library” for many. Freda was an enthusiastic supporter of the Arts and never missed a chance to attend music or theatre, especially if it was local talent. She encouraged local gardeners, supported local farmers, cheered local musicians, and welcomed visitors to share the beauty and flavours of Cape Breton. Freda was a long-time member of the Westmount United Church.
Freda is survived by her daughter, Marjorie; son-in-law, Jose Aquino; grandchildren, Michael and Christopher, and sister, Lucy.
She is predeceased by beloved husband, Donald, and daughter, Jane.
Freda was blessed to be able to remain in her own home until the end. Many thanks to those special people who made that possible.
Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday February 10, 2018 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service, a reception will follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, or charity of your choice.
