With the salt in the breeze and the sounds of the waves against the bow, Gerald Joseph Whelan chartered a new course to eternal happiness surrounded by friends and family. Jerry passed away on Saturday, Feb. 3rd, 2018 in the care of the compassionate men and women at the Miller Centre. Jerry is predeceased by his devoted wife Marie (2016), parents Martin and Mary, and sister Helen (South Carolina). Leaving to celebrate Jerry’s life are his two sons: Scott (Michelle) and Paul (Joann); poppy’s Golden Treasures his grandchildren: Isabella, Sophia, Allison, Victoria and Brett, you always made him proud and forever remember “your poppy’s favourite.” Also leaving to mourn Jerry’s passing is his mother-in-law Gertrude Snelgrove, Gertie was more of a mother who took Jerry under her wing and treated him like family, brother: Bill (Eleanor) in Ottawa and sister Jean in Memphis as well as numerous other extended family and friends. Jerry was blessed to have good friends in his life Tom and Ann Making, you are worth your weight in gold. What a special bond you had with Jerry and Marie. Jerry worked for Marine Atlantic for 37 years, many a story was told about Jerry’s escapades with co-workers, Tom Walsh we can guarantee you were always part of it. Thank you for being a friend.
Cremation has taken place. Visitations will take place on Monday, Feb. 5th from 12pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm and Tuesday, Feb. 6th from 10am-9pm at Barrett’s Funeral, 328 Hamilton Avenue. A celebration of Jerry’s life will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 7th at 11am from Barrett’s Chapel. A private family burial will take place at a later time.
