Cecil  Small

It is with great sadness that the family of Cecil Small, age 95, announce his passing at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center in Amherst NS on Friday January 26, 2018. Born in Lewisporte NL on May 2, 1922 he was the son of the late Frederick and Althea Small.
Cecil is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise (née: McKibbon); his brother Ernest Lorne Small (Jean), his children: stepson Laurie Mutch (Mary), stepdaughter Lindsay Lozinski (Michael), son Stanford Small (Patricia), daughter Shawnie Kinnear (John), daughter Rhonda MacDonald (Paul), son Robert Small (Wendy), 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Parmenious and Roy and two sisters Mildred and Pheobe.
He was a store manager for Sears, living in Moncton, Bathurst, Sussex and then transferred to Amherst. He spent 23 years with Sears and also worked at Home Hardware. Residing in Amherst the last 60 years Cecil was instrumental in building the first little league field in Amherst (Ernie Landry Field). He was very active in minor baseball and Lion Cecil Small ball field was named in his honor.
Cecil served in the Royal Air Force in World War 2 and also served with US Air Transport Command. He was a chartered member of the Moncton Flying Club and also started the model airplane club in Moncton. He was a Master Mason of the Alexandra Lodge. He also was a Life Member of the Amherst Lions Club holding all offices several times. He also received the Caring Canadian Award from the Governor General and also the Exceptional Volunteer Services Award from the town of Amherst. He was instrumental in starting Drug Awareness in the schools and also served on the school board.
The staff that cared for Cecil at Shannex will be remembered for being patient and kind. They were held in high regard by him. Special thanks to Dr. Skotnicki and the staff who gave Cecil special care at the Intensive Care unit at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at Trinity-St. Stephen's United Church, Amherst, on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 1p.m. Burial to take place in the St. Stephen's United Church Cemetery, Redbank, NB in the spring.
