Elizabeth Jean (née Patterson) Kell

Elizabeth Jean (née Patterson) Kell

Jean passed away peacefully at the QEII Infirmary, Halifax on February 10, 2018, surrounded by her four children. She was 80 years old at the time of her death. A Funeral service celebrating Jean’s life and burial will be held at a later date at St. John the Baptist Church in New Glasgow. Notice of the date and time of the service will be published, and the family hopes to see all of Jean’s friends there. Born in New Glasgow on May 10, 1937, she was the daughter of Walter Patterson and Margaret (Kelly). Her early education was at St. John’s Academy New Glasgow, followed by Saint Joseph’s Convent School in Mabou, and Mount Saint Bernard College, in Antigonish. After graduating, along with her twin sister Joyce, from Saint Martha’s Hospital School of Nursing, she worked at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax and at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. She married Anthony Kell in 1963, and they resided in Antigonish. She moved to Halifax in 2011, to be close to her youngest son Edward. Jean was a deeply religious person who was devoted to the well being of her family. Through all of life’s challenges, she showed remarkable resilience, deriving strength from her family and friends, her faith, and always showed an irrepressible sense of humor. In her earlier days she delighted in playing the piano, and throughout her life she appreciated classical music and movies from Hollywood’s “Golden Era.” Jean is survived by one daughter, Laura Kell of Charlottetown (Scott Burke), and three sons: Anthony Kell, Antigonish; Gerald Kell, Antigonish; Hugh Edward Kell (Andrea Van Hal) of Halifax, and her beloved grandchildren Liam, Lauren, and Audrey Kell. Jean is also survived and remembered by her twin sister Joyce Burke, brother Edward Patterson, and sister in law Shirley Patterson, all in New Glasgow. The Family wishes to give special thanks to the staff of Unit 8.3 at the QEII, for the professional and sensitive care they provided to our mother during this difficult time. Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the VON Halifax.
