Mary Catherine MacDonald

Date de décès : 6 mars 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Mary Catherine MacDonald, announce her passing on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney, where she resided for the past four years.
Born in Gabarus Lake on December 25, 1921, Mary was the daughter of the late George and Effie (MacDonald) MacLean. She was the eldest of three children and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mary lived most of her life in Gabarus Lake, except for a few years at Mira Manor, before moving to the Cove. For many years, she was very active in her church, Zion Wesley United, where she served as a member of the church choir and the UCW. Mary enjoyed knitting, quilting, baking birthday cakes for her grandchildren, traveling and visiting family and friends. Music was a big part of Mary’s life. She loved listening to fiddle music, as well as Gaelic singing and in her younger years, loved to dance. She was a fluent Gaelic speaker and always welcomed the opportunity to speak the language. Mary will always be remembered for her kindness and keen sense of humour. No family member, friend or even a repair man left her house without a cup of tea and tea biscuits, cookies or pie, possibly all three. She loved people and enjoyed joking with them and having a good laugh. Mary had a strong love for her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Phyllis MacLeod, Sydney Forks, Faye (Alex) MacIntyre, St. Margaret’s Bay and Donette (Nelson) MacCormack, Blackett’s Lake; grandchildren, Doreen (Ross), Brent, Donna, Kent, Lisa, John (Tymarah), Janine (Billy), Laura (Simon), Amy (Greg) and Ryan; ten great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. As well, she leaves a very special friend and roommate, Josephine MacDonald.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Donald M. MacDonald; brothers and wives, Alex (Annie) and John Neil (Christine); brothers-in-law and wives, Warren (Fema), Angus (Marion) and Roddie; sister-in-law, Mary Ann (in infancy), and nephew, Warren P. MacDonald.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Critchley and the wonderful staff on the Orchard Unit at the Cove Guest Home.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, March 9 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Zion Wesley United Church, Gabarus Lake on Saturday, March 10 at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment in Zion Wesley Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Zion Wesley United Church or a charity of your choice.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
