William Ira Carr Balderston

Lieu de naissance : Crossroads

Lieu de décès : Summerside, Ile du Prince-Édouard, Canada
Date de décès : 20 mars 2018

On March 20, 2018, Ira was promoted to glory at Prince County Hospital, Summerside, surrounded by family.
Born at Crossroads, PEI, he was the son of Carr and Elizabeth Balderston.
Ira spent most of his adult life in Cape Breton where he was photographer and reporter for the Cape Breton Highlander, and the Neighbors’ section of the Cape Breton Post, and Editor of The Northside Tribune. His last position was as Family Services Coordinator for the Sydney Salvation Army. Ira was selfless in his love for his community as a member of the The Gideons International, The Rotary Club, Cape Breton Help Line, Feed Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Emergency Measures, and NS Alternative Measures. Ira served on the Board of Directors, and as Treasurer for St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Sydney Mines.
Ira was an avid collector of antique radios and cameras and visitors may see some of his beloved collection at the North Sydney Historical Society Museum. Many of his photos and columns, including “Ira’s Alley” are housed in The Beaton Institute at Cape Breton University. Since moving to Summerside, Ira served on the Salvation Army Corps Council, and he was as a Food Bank volunteer. Ira was a member of the Summerside and Area Christian Council and Prime Time at the Church of the Nazarene.
Ira loved picnics at North Rustico and no matter what the season, you would find him sitting by the water in Cavendish. He liked to visit the many dairy bars in the area for a little ice cream sundae (or two).
His many friends and family will dearly miss Ira. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lauretta (nee MacKay); his precious children, Vanessa (Seth) Moore, and Vaughan (Nicolas); his beautiful sister, Gail (Neil) MacDonald; his special niece, Marlene Hartling; as well as his many other nieces, nephews and their families.
There will be a graveside service at the Calvin Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Mermaid, led by Capts. Neil and Dolores Abbott, Friday March 23, 2018 at 10 a.m. A service in celebration of Ira’s life will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvin Presbyterian Church Cemetery or the Salvation Army – Summerside PEI. www.belvederefh.com
