Barrie Huggan Fraser

BARRIE HUGGAN FRASER

Age 80, died March 20 in Halifax. Son of John Simon Fraser and Gladys (Huggan) Fraser, he was born and raised in New Glasgow NS. He completed the pre-engineering course at Acadia University in 1957 and received his B. Arch. from the University of Toronto in 1962. He worked with several private architectural firms before joining the federal government in Halifax. He worked for 29 years as the Chief Architect for Parks Canada/Atlantic Region, retiring in 1997.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, the former Rhoda Jean McLeod (Rhodie); two sons, Graham of Halifax, and Alex (Lisa-Ann) of London Ontario; granddaughters Sophie-Tang, Zoey, and Naomi; and sister Doris Hiltz of Little Harbour NS. He was predeceased by one son, Stephen (in childhood).
Barrie was a member of Rockingham United Church, where he served on various committees. He was involved in Scouts Canada as an active leader and later as a member of the group committee. Barrie loved the outdoors and treasured time spent at “the camp” in Pictou County as well as swimming, canoeing, and sailing at the cottage at King’s Head. Proud of his highland heritage, Barrie enthusiastically researched the history of his branch of the Fraser family. A handyman and woodworker, he loved home projects and designing and building ingenious practical devices. Music was one of his great loves, especially Bach, and he was a keen supporter of music in Halifax. Photography, too, was a passion, and produced a beautiful record of his many travels.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Ave, Saturday March 24 from 2-4 pm. The funeral service will be held Sunday March 25 at Rockingham United Church, 12 Flamingo Drive, at 2pm with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QEII Health Sciences Center Foundation or the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
