John "Willis" Bannister

Bannister, John “Willis” – 74, of Truro, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and the caring support team of the Palliative Care Unit on March 25, 2018 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Inverness, he was a son of the late Gorman and Jessie (MacPhail) Bannister. Willis adored his wife and three children. His biggest joys in life were his five grandchildren and he was the absolute best "papa". Willis will be lovingly remembered by his children, Leonard (Lorri) Bannister; Debby (Martin) Willett and Darcy (Melissa) Bannister; sister, Shirley Bernard; sister-in-law, Mary Annette Decoste; grandchildren, Tyler, Brady, Bretton, Devan, and Shay; four nieces and nephews. Willis was pre-deceased by his wife of many years, Neilena Ann Bannister (Macphee); brothers, Leonard and Murdock; sister, Agnes.
Willis’ story began July 16, 1943 in Lake Ainslie, NS. He was the eldest of five children. His early days were spent on the farm. He attended school in both Lake Ainslie and Port Hood, graduating from Port Hawksbury High School when the family moved. It was shortly after High School that Willis met and married the love of his life "Nina". He worked at various jobs moving his family around the province. His quick wit and charm made him a natural salesman.
Willis decided in the late 70s to follow his dream, moving back to Lake Ainslie to start his own business. He and his wife owned and operated "Bannister's Furniture and Appliances" for the next ten years. Willis moved to the Truro area and took a sales position at Macgregor Bedding, working at this position until the factory closed. His later years were spent working at "u need a taxi" his gift of gab made him a great fit in his role of dispatcher. Willis finally decided to retire after falling ill this past November.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. To celebrate the life of Willis, the family will receive friends from 6-9 pm Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the funeral home. Interment will take place at a later date in Inverness, NS. If so desired, donations may be made to Palliative Care Unit, CEHHC.
