Mary Martha Gardiner, age 92 of Gardiner Mines, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2018 at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay. Born in Gardiner Mines on June 7, 1925, Mary was the daughter of the late Ronald and Mary Josephine (Strang) Gardiner.
Mary was a resident in Seaview Manor, Glace Bay for the past number of years. She was a Registered Nurse graduating from St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay in 1950. Mary completed further studies in the diseases of children in Children’s Memorial Hospital in Montreal. Mary also received her nursing degree from the State of New York. She worked in various hospitals; but she was most proud of being the head of the pediatric unit in St. Joseph’s hospital in Glace Bay.
Mary was a very faithful member of her former church St. James Parish in Gardiner Mines. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens and received a lot of pleasure from her plants and flowers. Mary was also an avid Blue Jays fan, expert knitter and enjoyed making various items for her family. She also loved spending her time with her family.
Mary is survived by her brother, Ignatius Gardiner (Maxine), New Brunswick; her sister-in-law, Pauline Gardiner (Gardiner Mines), and her special friend and caregiver, Anita Budden. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Mary was predeceased by a sister, Patricia; brothers, Frank (Elizabeth), John (Catherine) and Andrew, and sister-in-law, Marion.
As per Mary’s wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau is Thursday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church followed by interment in St. James Cemetery with her mother. The reception will take place in the church hall.
Donations may be made to St. James Cemetery Fund or a charity of one’s choice. The family wish to extend a sincere thank you to the compassionate and caring staff at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay.
