Rita Butler (nee Prendergast)

Date de naissance : 2 mai 1927

Date de décès : 6 mai 2018

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that our family announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our dear mother, Rita Butler of Cupids, at the Agnes Pratt Nursing Home, St. John's on Sunday, May 6, 2018. Predeceased by her husband Ronald Butler (1957) and her loving son Ron Butler (2012), parents Richard and Frances (nee Maloney) Prendergast, infant siblings Mary Ann and Richard, brothers Michael Prendergast (Isabelle), James Prendergast (Margaret) and brother-in-law Mark Morrissey as well as her in-laws from the Butler, Kidder and Warford families. Rita was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, mother-in-law and friend. Left to mourn with cherished memories are her daughters Frances Smith, Genevieve Butler, Joan Delaney (Mike) and Barbara Hennebury (Paul) and daughter-in-law Pauline Butler. Rita was a very special "Grandmother", "Nan" and "Nanny" to her treasured grandchildren Lisa Grant (Rick), Chis Delaney, Jody Delaney (Juanita), Dana Smith (Craig), Linda Fowler, Stephen Wight (Karen), Tanya Snow (Calvin), Krista Ryan (Todd), Melissa Karle (Jason), Paul Hennebury (Patricia), Mark Hennebury, Kimberley Smith (Keith) and Jonathan Hennebury (Lindsay) as well 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also mourning her passing are her beloved sisters Hilda Morrissey and Ellen "Nellie" Prendergast and many special nieces and nephews of whom she was proud to be "Aunt Rita". Rita was especially proud to call Cupids her home and when asked by her caregivers where she was from she would always answer: I'm from "Historic Cupids". She will forever be remembered as a kind, caring and generous lady who would always put the needs of her family and others before herself. Her home will be remembered as a welcoming retreat for the many visits from family and friends, You could smell the freshly baked tea buns as you walked in the door and no matter how many would show up for a Sunday visit, there was always more than enough to feed each and everyone. Years of practice raising five children on her own endowed her with special gifts of compassion, ingenuity, resourcefulness. Rita was dedicated to her faith and loved her Church (St. Patrick's) where had dedicated many hours of service in stewardship. Her faith was profound and a source of great comfort over the years. Rita had many friends in Cupids many of whom have also passed. She was a seamstress to many and was known for her sewing handiwork. Friends and family would count on her to make minor and major adjustments to garments and no one was ever denied or disappointed in the outcome. Her creative sewing ranged from mending small items and to making wedding and bridal party dresses. Rita took great pride in her home and enjoyed her garden and sitting in her swing on summer days. Special thank you to the South view staff at The Agnes Pratt Home for their care and compassion to our Mom during her stay. Resting at Broughton's Funeral Home, Brigus.
