With sorrow and great sadness, we announce the death of John Stevenson Smith, age 79, of 22 RB Smith St., on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at the Miner’s Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines.
Born in Sydney Mines on April 5, 1939, he was the son of the late Robert B. and Margaret Anne (MacKay) Smith of Sydney Mines.
A welder by trade, John worked for Procor in Ontario and the Halifax Shipyards for a number of years. John was a neighborhood guy. He helped his father build the family home. He coached countless young boxers at Memorial or had the neighborhood kids up at Brown St. Ball Park chasing down flies. He was a proud member of the Sydney Mines Story Telling Club. A fixture at Tommy Jacques store for years, he also worked at Cranes Grocery on Convent St. and at both S & S Meat Market locations. An avid gardener, he loved to share the rewards of his hobby. Every winter, John could often be seen walking up to the Sydney Mines Forum, skates in hand.
He is survived by sisters, Margaret Audoux, Lillian MacPhee, Janet Smith and sister-in-law, June Smith. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by brothers, James, Robert, Peter and Tom; two sisters in infancy; sister, Katherine Hebert and brother-in-law, Bud Audoux.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
