Phillip Anthony Stoshnof

August 30, 1939 to July 30, 2018
On 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2018 at the St. John Regional Hospital St. John, New Brunswick, Phillip Anthony Stoshnof passed away after complications from 2 heart attacks. He is predeceased by his father Phillip Stooshnov Sr., mother Pauline (nee Davidoff), son Tyler Aspin and second wife Pia Elgaard. Phil or Sonny as he was also known to family and friends, leaves behind his eldest son Jason Aspin (wife Chunying Li) and grandsons Jack and Lucas, former wife Linda Aspin, brother Ed Stooshnov (wife Diana) and sister Linda Allen (husband Gordon) and their families. Many cousins, too many to mention, will also miss Phillip. Phil lived a life outside the norm. When he finished school, he and cousin Dave boarded a cattle boat and took off to hitchhike around the world. Phil made many friends from all over who still communicated with him up to the time of his passing. Like family, he always kept friends close. After a few years of travel, he settled down in his hometown of Calgary where he opened one of the first coffee houses, Club Zambezi where many great future musicians would congregate and perform including Joni Mitchell, Will Miller of the Irish Rovers, Tommy Chong and the Stampeders. He also operated an antique store, entered into the real estate business and during that period met and was married to Linda (nee Roberts). In 1966, with his wife and new baby boy (Jason) in tow, Phillip took his family on a one year transcontinental holiday and found themselves in PEI and he never looked back. After seeing so much of the world and experiencing all he could, he knew he had found his place. Phil and Linda bought the Hemlock Inn and grist mill in Little Sands where he built cottages for the business of tourism. He also had a successful and unique restaurant in Charlottetown called the Ancient Mariner. After many years of being self-employed Phil joined the ranks of Tanner Eye where he stayed for several years. Eventually his entrepreneurial spirit called out to him and with his new wife Pia they started and built a thriving organic garlic farm. Phil was a highly intelligent individual who loved debating with anyone on any topic and was interested in so many things. He read all he could and used his imagination to create by inventing better items to benefit the world. Phil's son Jason, a successful entrepreneur, was taught by his father, 'If you can dream it, you can do it!' Phil will be missed by many, but the following must be understood by all. Phillip always got a chuckle out of his P.E.I. friends and neighbours referring to him as being 'from away' even after 53 terrific years on the island. But no matter what they said about where he was from, Phil always felt and knew he was amongst friends. A CELEBRATION OF LIFE WILL BE HELD 2 p.m. Saturday, September 1st, 2018 in the Clubhouse of the old Eagles View Golf Course in Murray River…in typical Phil style it will end when the fun is over and the music stops. In lieu of flowers the family asks any donations can be made to the SPCA.
